SCIENCE!

Stem Cell Research has been a controversial topic for at least the last 10 years.  Recently, a court blocked federally provided funding for stem cell research in the U.S.

Take 10 minutes to research the controversy surrounding Stem Cells.  Why would federal funding for a project with such potential to change the lives of people for the better ever be taken away?  What are the two sides of this issue?  Based on what you know about it now, which side do you agree with?

I think Stem Cell Research should be funded but I also think that the money could be put towards a better thing than helping the diabetic. If a state has other more seriose issues then the money needs to get put towards that.

I think that is should be funded just because it would be cool to see something like this to happen in our day and age. But i also think that i could be put towards better things.

I think Stem Cell Research should be funded because it is as important as other issues out there, because kids who has diabetic parents, or brothers and sisters, could loose a family member from diabetes, so it should be funded.

I also think that Stem cell research should be funded, but there are way more serious and urgent cases of other diseases and sicknesses that the money could go to. basically the money could be put to better use.

I agree with all four people above. Stem cell research should be funded by the government. The only thing is the money doesvneed to be out to better use.

Federal Funding with potential to change peoples lives from diabetes, was taken away because they have to use a destroy a human embryo to run tests on it. And in America they say it is the same thing as murder. There are to sides to this because one reason is that it could save lives and the other reason is that it costs allot of money to fund which could go to more important things and they have to use human embryos. I believe that if there is something more important to put money towards then it should go to that instead.

I think stem sell research should be funded because it could be the answer to help treat numerous diseases and health problems including; Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, heart diseases, stroke and Diabetes (Type 1),birth defects, spinal cord injuries, it could help replace or repair damaged organs and reduce the risk of transplantation (you could possibly get a copy of your own heart in a heart-transplantation in the future), and stem cells may play a major role in cancer. The con of stem cell research is that it is expensive and you have to use aborted embryos to test it. I still think it should be done but it shouldn't be tested as much to save more embryos, and also money.

I think that federal funding would be canceled because the government have things going on right now that people would see as more important than Cell research. I think that people don't care that much about it, so that is why they object to it. The two sides of this story is that one side believes that the cell research will help everyone, but the other side is that people don't need this research and that they need the money for things more important. Also the law that Bush had placed plays a huge part in this battle that scientists fight every day. Personally, I think that people should man up and get this thing done right now, destroying all of the diseases that cause the world to constantly lose lives.

I found this topic very confusing and complex but I think they should continue funding to save lives. I can however understand why people would think there is other issues and topics more important. You never know what scientists and doctors could figure out or cure though.

Last week, the first actual human trial using stem cells began.
They injected stem cells into the spinal column of a person who was paraylized from the chest down.
Within three years, we should know if these stems cells have had any effect on repairing the injury.
The best case scenario would be that the person regains some feeling or movement or abilities as the stem cells repair and replaced the damaged spinal cord.
The worst case scenario is that nothing happens to the individuals in the trials.
The contrversy surrounds the methods by which stem cells are isolated or harvested.
They are taken from unused human embryos, which some people believe is murder.

In my opinion i believe that stem cell research should be funded. It can help cure many different illnesses and i believe that this is very important. People above are saying it could be put to a better cause, but we need to save more lives because everyday many people are dieing from diseases. If the worst case scenario is that nothing happens to the individual then I dont understand what there is to loose.

Stem cell research should be funded because it can save many people lives like paralysed people and people with Parkinson and oldsimers because maybe stem cell can stop it from happening. Stem cell research can be very help full in society today and it is the breaking new in medical history.

Stem cell research, I believe, should not be funded too heavily. Yes, it is a good idea, and it is an interesting theory, but it's only that: a theory. We should invest in this if small-step medical procedures are built up on. That, I think, would earn stem cell research federal funding again. Until we have an idea of the potential and limitations of stem cell research, it should be given a minimal budget to support it until further testing is done.

I believe stem cell research should only be given to people who desperately need it. It should not be used to heel scars or fix blemishes.
