Debate the possible beneficial outcomes of stem cell research with the possible moral hangups of using human embryos for scientific research.

The morality of stem cell research is questionable, but I am all for it. I can see though, how the "morality" side of the debate can say these things. We are not even entirely sure stem cells will work entirely, we do not know any of the consequences of it, but we do know that success, in one way, is achieved with stem cells. The end result of stem cell research is a patient going home saying, "Gee. I never would have been walking again without that injection." While that is very nice for the patient, the embryo that was aborted to cure his paralysis was ultimately ended. But i put forth a question, two even. Do we consider the stem cell implanted him to be alive, inside the patient? Could the organ that was re-developed inside his body somehow be different to a regular organ? And is an unborn but fertilized embryo a living human being, with a set of emotions, a soul? If we can answer those questions, and come to a mutually agreed response, the trouble of stem cell research should, at least, tone down some.

I totally agree with Bryan excpet some stuff didnt make sense. But i like how he said " The end result of stem cell research is a patient going home saying, "Gee. I never would have been walking again without that injection." which if we could do would be very good, but then everyone would be walking and cured and to be honest i think we need some paralise and sick becuase that is how the world is.

Bryan: Embryos are not implanted or injected into patients. Stem cells, which are HARVESTED from the unused embryos, are conditioned and implanted.

Once the stem cells are harvested, the remaining cells and the stem cells do not constitute an embryo.

The cells are conditioned to grow into a specific type of tissue before they are implanted into a patient. At this point, they are nothing more than a group of cells that, if given the right set of circumstances, could develop into certain types of tissues.

There is no chance of a stem cells growing into an entire human being once injected.

Erin: We need some paralysis and sickness? Sickness is a way for natural selection to act on our population. Would the world be a better place with a few paralyzed people or if that ailment was treatable?

I think the benefits for stem cell research is reasonable, that is because if we use the stem cell research that give's the others who are paralyzed or sick a chance of actually living there life, for example if they played sports, and thats all they got, and after being paralyzed, that can be very hurtful to them because, they dont know what to do now, if sports where there life, and if we can say that stem cell research does work, then that would give the person a chance of living again. But then again we have to look at the possibilities of it not working, and it may do more harm to your body.

The possible beneficial outcomes of using stem cells and stem cell research is that it could help us cure numerous diseases and disabilities like diabetes and spinal chord injuries. Some of the moral hangups would be that we are killing embryos and to some people that might seem like murder, but they aren't even used, they sit in a freezer all day doing nothing. I think we that it is a great idea to do stem cell research, but it is expensive.

Stem cell research could be very benificial to people with injuries and also may lead to some much more important discoveries. I think that using the embreyos that would never live anyway for science is much better than just throwing them out or sitting in a fridge. At least that way they are put to some use and have a purpose other than to take up space in the fridge.

I think that stem cell research benifits us in many ways. It could help cure many disieses or injuries and even lead to other discoveries that nobody has even thought of. I agree with all of the people above. Stem cell research could give people there lives back.

I like what Amani talked about a sports player being [paralyzed that can be disastrous since now they would have to find something else completely new. Especially if sports is all they had

Stem cells do not fit the description of human in my book. They are not fully developed, and do not have what many scientists debate to be a soul. What people have to ask themselves is; "Are they actually using left over stem cells?"
One person is paralyzed from the neck down, the other "Person"/ Stem cell is being slowly killed in a freezer in the back of the Laboratory.
