Navigational ‘Magic’ of Sea Turtles Explained | Wired Science | Wired.com

Can you think of any other species that accomplish incredible things that seem to defy explanation?

I think that Salmon does because it travels all the way to the Pacific during the season and comes back to the place where it was born to lay it's eggs. They must know something to be able to do that!

One other species that accomplishes incredible things that seems to defy explanation is the Sea Turtle. They can detect the minute changes in the Earth's magnetic field that allows them to tell latitude. (Some birds, fish, and crustaceans also share that ability)

I also checked one of the links at the bottom (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/10/cockroach-navigation/), and found that cockroaches use geomagnetic detection (or, in other words, the magnetic field) to detect their way around. Scientists tested this by rotating an artificial magnetic field around them - and they changed direction!

i think Hugo is right i thought pigeon where stupid util i saw a column about them using the earths magnetic force for flying.

I think Hugo is right but also I think that birds, whales and bats are very interesting because they do some really big migrations all over the world and they usually travel in large groups so its like they are all connected in a big family.

I know salmon are migitory like the come back to the same spot to were they were born I also think butterflies and birds do this but some birds just fly north or south.

I think that fish are amazing they come all shapes and sizes and do outstanding thing like a cod can lay 100,000,000 eggs in a season, a seahorse transfers its eggs to the male and the male incubates them for 1 mouth before giving birth to 1,000 babies.

I think bats dolphins and whales are amazing , because whales do amazing amounts of travelling just to a nesting sight.bats because they are blind and rely on sound to locate things the same as dolphins

I think that bats are really cool because they can navigate themselves to somewhere 1,000 miles away in pitch black. Scientists tested them by taking them away from their homes at sunset and keeping them till it was dark and then taking the bats far far away and all of the bats made it home by themselves with no light.

I think it would be amazing but almost impossible for humans to measure longitude let alone a sea turtle. I also think its amazing how salmon and turtles are soo different in soo many ways but still have the same ability to measure longitude!

I think salmon are amazing because they can go back to the same spot they were born in to lay their eggs. That takes long term memory to r ember were you were born i dont know of any other fish that can go back to the same exact spot they were born in.
