SCIENCE!

Read this article about coral bleaching in the caribbean.  It seems that some areas of the West Indies are in for a nother severe round of coral bleaching.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/science/earth/21coral.html?_r=1&ref=science

Have you ever seen bleached coral in your adventures in the waters of the BVI?  After reading the article and understanding what little we know about the causes of this phenomenon, is there anything that can be done to fight coral bleaching?

the coral reefs are very important because they are not dead they are actually alive.

Coral bleaching is so uncool. I wish that people would treat the ozone and everything else a lot better so this doesn`t happen. I wish that everyone could be eco friendly and help save our planet! When one thing is kill everything is affected!

Just by reading the introduction of the article I realized how important it is that we at-lest try to save our corral reefs. Imagine if a big percent of coral dies because of us coursing global warming, we wont only be killing reef fish but risking the life of larger species, all because WE killed there natural habitat. If its true and the author is correct about us in the Caribbean being affected in the next few weeks think about our economy not only will WE be killing natural habitats we could also be decreasing the amount of tourists- witch our economy is based on- visiting the B.V.I. I agree with Clive Wilkinson i am also very depressed by the howl situation.

coral bleaching is not natural and it destroys the coral even more. they are so beautiful so why do people have to bleach them???

This article has made me realize that the coral reefs are being destroyed which effects a whole chain of fish , sharks whales and other sea life that feeds of the coral reefs . The coral reefs are not the only environments that are affected. The Glaciers are melting up north and down south, which results in the sea levels rising. Causing places like new york,to disappear under the water.

I had no idea this kinda thing existed!!!
After reading the article I've started thinking that maybe there's a way we can protect the coral??? Possibly there's something we could lay over the coral to protect it, but that would take tons of time to do..... maybe we could create a harmless fluid that acts like suncream but sticks to the coral....then eventually gets washed off???? It seems that people are getting barely anywhere with saving the earth, so what about starting with the coral?

Coral Bleaching is something important to care about.

After readng this article i learned more about coral bleaching than i ever knew. In this article it metions the major coral bleaching all over the world.....and the caribbean! Things that i have never heard about are happening before my eyes. Before i had read this article i had no idea that this year 2010 was the hottest year recorded and that this year our precious, sensitive coral reefs will be bleached by the sun.

With all this talk about saving the earth they havent done a very good job.

I wish there was some thing that we could do to prevent this from happening.

i have seen bleach coral once when i was diving in that area everything looked dead. and then we moved into a different area and there were tons of fish this made me realize if that speeds to the hole of the bvi's reefs we might not have any tourist and the population of fish will die out.

Coral bleaching is awful stuff! I was surprised to find out how serious it is! Alot of people do not try to get informed so no one really does much! It is like the sharks (grade six), because some people think that they are not important and do not realize that it is not just the coral that suffers! i agree with kiefer that if the coral die out so will the bvi's main industry, tourism!

Bleaching coral is just wrong. I have seen a couple places with bleached coral and it ruins the natural color of the coral and I totally agree with Niamh

to me coral bleaching is so sad. but many people dont know this, but some coral that can looked bleached is just dead coral due to just plain life.coral bleachin has affected Anegada giganticaly.it used to be so much more beautiful. we can only help by not using stuff that has co2 gases. many places in the pacific have miles of dead coral i dont want that tohappen to the VI

Agreeying with chloe, i would say that all this see life dying because of habitat loss is, well, devastating. its sad that so few people know about this and even fewer are doing something about it. With global warming and all that, its not sunrising that heat is causing some disastrous occurrences. Coral is a living thing not just a rock.

I often experience coral bleaching when i go scuba diving. i'm starting to see white coral. i know that wasn't there before because i have seen pictures of me by coral in 2002,2003 with beautiful colors.

although we know very little about coral bleaching we know that global warming is what is causing the heat. by reducing our Carbon emissions we can help to reduce coral bleaching.

All of this awful bleaching of the coral is caused by global warming which has been caused by US!! It is so sad what has happen to our beautiful reefs- the poor fishes & sharks... we all love snorkeling- well I sure do!!! If you want to continueto be able to see this beautiful wonder anymore- STOP using up so much garbage & plastic!!

I totally agree with Lee Lou. The coral reefs belong to us and they are a big part of our lives and also the fish. The Caribbean is supposed to be beautiful and the reefs help make it true. The reefs are homes to our fish. Many tourist come to the Caribbean to see the coral reefs and see all the beautiful fish. If the fish and coral are gone then our economy will drop way more than a little. I’m very worried about the outcome of the coral bleaching that will happen over the weeks to come.

I when i finished reading this article i noticed that coral reefs are REALLY important to us. If we dont have them the fish will die because the fish and other animals feed of them.

Carol bleaching is something we need to look after and try hard to stop it if we wont the fish.

Wow, I didn't even know coral could be bleached? Reading the NY Times article cleared most things up but the only people we can blame for this mishap is ourselves. This all goes back to the whole idea of "Keeping Green and Staying Green" "Saving the World" but it's not really working in my eyes. If we don't act soon then were not going to have anything else. I blame all of these events on the dissolving ozone layer. There is nothing we can do because unless scientists find someway to "Rebuild" the ozone layer, it's not going to happen. Everything will just get worse than it already is. This is ridiculous.

I have seen dead coral on the beach at Nanny Cay that has washed in from the small reef area they have in the water there. I think we should continue to do all the green programs that we do and find more to do.

Coral bleaching is a horrible thing that we have caused, I have seen coral bleaching and it's not pretty and things like tourism businesses that rely on them to make look things look beautiful and it is depressing that we are the cause of it.

I think that coral bleaching is getting worse all the time because nobody is doing much about it and the fishing industry will go down drastically if nothing is done about this. Coral bleaching is wiping out so many coral reefs it is like a poison that just takes minutes to spread. What will happen if nothing is done about coral bleaching is there some thing that we could do about it? this is something that does not go away in the night when we sleep we have do some think about it i agree with Niamh that coral bleaching is wrong.

I find it such a shame that the lovely corals are getting bleached and that no one cares. Since no one cares the ocean food chain might be at risk if i could help i would if I had the knowledge how to but i cant because not many people listen to children when they have something useful to say.

maybe they should create a coral farm when the corals are put into a suitable water temperature and are given what they need to grow and and create offspring.
